Don't Let Just Any Flooring Contractor In Your Home

Updated: Mar 21, 2023

Your home is a sacred space that deserves the best care and attention when it comes to any kind of installation or renovation. Whether you are looking to upgrade to hardwood, replace your carpet with laminate or LVP, or refinish your existing hardwoods, it's essential to choose a reputable and trustworthy contractor for the job. Unfortunately, not all flooring contractors are created equal, and choosing the wrong one can lead to a host of problems and headaches. Here are some key reasons why you shouldn't let just any flooring contractor in your home.

1. Many Companies Use Subcontractors They May Not Even Know

One of the biggest risks of hiring a flooring contractor is that many companies use subcontractors they may not even know. This means that the people installing your flooring may not be trained, experienced, or insured, which can lead to a range of problems. You may end up with poorly installed flooring, damage to your property, or even injuries to the workers. By choosing a contractor who employs their own team of skilled and trained workers, you can be sure that your installation is done correctly and safely.

2. It's Hard to Get Your Money Back If There is a Problem With Installation

If there is a problem with the installation of your flooring, such as uneven or damaged planks, incorrect underpayment used, incorrect size of expansion gap, it can be challenging to get your money back if you hired an unscrupulous contractor; and if you simply decide to not pay them they can put a lien on your home and try to force a sale to get paid. Although you may be able to win in court, it will probable cost more than the floor itself and may take years to get your money back. Many unlicensed and uninsured contractors do not have the resources to compensate you for any mistakes they may have made during the installation process. To avoid this, always choose a reputable and licensed flooring contractor who stands by their work and offers a guarantee or warranty on their services. The estimate or quote should state not only what they expect out of you as the customer but that they will provide a quality installation and craftsmanship and everything they are going to do. Make sure to read the fine print and make sure there are no hidden fees.

3. Many Contractors are Not Even Insured

Another issue with hiring just any flooring contractor is that many are not insured. This means that if there is an accident or injury during the installation process, you could be held liable for any damages or medical expenses. A reputable contractor will have liability and workers' compensation insurance to protect you and your property from any unexpected costs or lawsuits.

4. If the Contractor is Not Licensed, Any Warranty on the Flooring Through the Manufacturer is Voided

It's also important to note that if the flooring contractor you hire is not licensed, any warranty on the flooring through the manufacturer is voided. This means that if there are any issues with the flooring years down the road, even if it is the fault of the manufacturer you will not be able to claim a replacement or repair from the manufacturer. Always check that the contractor you hire has a licensed company with the state you live in and that they have good reviews from their customers.

5. Other Reasons Not to Hire Just Any Flooring Contractor

There are other reasons not to hire just any flooring contractor. For example, some contractors may use subpar materials or cut corners to save costs, resulting in a substandard installation. Others may overcharge or provide poor customer service, leaving you feeling unsatisfied or ripped off. This happens every single day to more and more unsuspecting customers. To avoid these issues, do your research, ask for referrals, and always choose a reputable and experienced flooring contractor for your home renovation project.

In conclusion, choosing the right flooring contractor is essential for a successful installation and a stress-free renovation process. Don't let just any contractor into your home; do your due diligence, ask for references, and choose a licensed, insured, and experienced contractor who has your best interests in mind. With the right contractor by your side, you can enjoy beautiful and durable flooring that enhances your home's value and aesthetics for years to come. It may be difficult to see but the picture shows laminate flooring being installed in a home but instead of installing it under the door jamb they just cut around all of them leaving huge gaps all round the home. They also just cut a line at most doorways instead of installing seamlessly into each room.

Good article, a little long though. I've hired a lot of contractors over the years and these are problems I've run across as well. Unfortunately it's becoming harder and harder to get a honest company to do good work.
